Satellite Internet for Base Camp
If your overlanding trip includes an established camp with access to power, Starlink can provide internet connectivity for phones, tablets, laptops and other connected devices.
Starlink Gen 3
A strong choice for a more stationary remote camp, cabin or base camp where portability is less important.
Starlink Mini
A more compact option for overlanders who want satellite internet at camp while keeping their setup smaller and easier to transport.
Before You Head Into Overlanding Country
Choosing the right communication and navigation equipment before your trip can make a big difference once you’re beyond reliable cellular coverage.
Should I rent Starlink Mini or Starlink Gen 3 for overlanding?
Starlink Mini is generally the more attractive option when compact size and portability are priorities. Starlink Gen 3 can make sense for longer stays or camps where compact storage is less important.
Do I still need an inReach if I have Starlink?
Yes, they serve different purposes. Starlink provides internet when it is set up and powered. An inReach travels with you and provides satellite messaging, tracking and interactive SOS away from your vehicle or Starlink setup.
Which device is best when I leave my vehicle to hike or explore?
The inReach Mini 2 and Mini 3 Plus are compact choices for portable satellite communication. The GPSMAP 67i is a strong choice when you also want dedicated handheld GPS navigation.
What’s the difference between an inReach and a PLB?
An inReach provides two-way satellite messaging and interactive SOS. A PLB is a dedicated emergency distress-signaling device and does not provide routine two-way messaging.
When should I choose a satellite phone?
Choose an Iridium satellite phone when you need real-time voice conversations outside cellular coverage rather than primarily text-based satellite messaging.
Can I use Starlink while I’m away from the vehicle?
Starlink is best thought of as connectivity for a location where the equipment can be set up and powered. A handheld satellite communicator is better suited to staying with you while exploring away from the vehicle.
When should I reserve my overlanding equipment?
We always recommend booking as early as possible to avoid out of stock gear. Choose a start date a few days before your departure/use date to reduce the impact of UPS shipping issues outside our control and to give yourself time to familiarize yourself with the equipment.
