Before You Head Into Hunting Country
Choosing the right communication and navigation equipment before your hunt can make a big difference once you’re beyond reliable cellular coverage.
What’s the best satellite communicator for a hunting trip?
It depends on what you need. The inReach Mini 2 is a strong lightweight option for messaging, tracking and SOS. The Mini 3 Plus adds expanded messaging capabilities, while the GPSMAP 67i combines satellite communication with dedicated handheld GPS navigation and mapping.
Should I rent an inReach or a satellite phone for hunting?
Choose an inReach when portable two-way messaging, tracking and interactive SOS are your main priorities. Choose a satellite phone when you need to make and receive actual real-time voice calls while outside cellular coverage.
Why would a hunter choose the GPSMAP 67i?
The GPSMAP 67i is a strong option for hunters traveling through unfamiliar remote terrain who want dedicated handheld GPS navigation and mapping together with satellite messaging, tracking and interactive SOS.
What’s the difference between an inReach and a PLB?
An inReach provides two-way satellite communication, tracking and interactive SOS when properly activated. A PLB is primarily a dedicated emergency distress beacon and does not provide routine two-way messaging.
Does my inReach rental include a data plan?
OER includes a basic data plan with its inReach rentals. Higher-use messaging and tracking options may also be available. Check the individual rental listing for current plan details, included usage and any additional charges.
Can I use Starlink at hunting camp?
Starlink can be a good option for an established hunting camp where you have suitable power and a clear enough view of the sky. It is best thought of as base-camp internet, rather than a replacement for the portable satellite communicator or emergency device you carry in the field.
Starlink Mini or Starlink Gen 3 for hunting camp?
Starlink Mini is the more compact option and makes sense when portability and a smaller setup are priorities. Starlink Gen 3 is well suited to a more stationary hunting camp or cabin where portability is less important.
Do satellite devices work without cell service?
Yes. Satellite communication devices are designed to communicate through satellite networks rather than cellular towers. They still require suitable satellite visibility and applicable active service.
When should I reserve equipment for my hunt?
We always recommend booking your rental as early as possible to avoid out of stock gear. We also recommend choosing a start date a few days in advance of your departure/use date in order to avoid UPS shipping issues outside our control and to give you more time to familiarize yourself with the equipment.
