Choose Your Starlink
Need internet at a campsite, remote cabin or base camp? OER offers two Starlink options depending on how much portability you need.
Starlink Gen 3
A strong choice for a more stationary campsite, cabin or base camp where portability is less important.
Starlink Mini
A more compact option for campers and travelers who prioritize portability and a smaller setup.
Before You Head to Camp
Choose the communication and connectivity equipment that makes sense for where you’re camping and how you plan to use it.
What’s the difference between an inReach and a satellite phone?
An inReach is primarily a compact satellite communicator built around messaging, tracking and interactive SOS. A satellite phone is the better choice when you need to make and receive actual real-time voice calls from areas without cellular coverage.
What’s the difference between an inReach and a PLB?
An inReach provides two-way satellite communication, tracking and interactive SOS when properly activated. A PLB is primarily a dedicated emergency distress beacon and does not provide routine two-way messaging.
Should I rent Starlink or an inReach for camping?
They serve different purposes. Starlink provides internet connectivity at camp and requires power and suitable sky visibility. An inReach is a small portable satellite communicator that can travel with you when you leave camp to hike, fish or explore.
Starlink Mini or Starlink Gen 3 — which should I choose?
Starlink Mini is the more compact option and makes sense when portability and a smaller setup are priorities. Starlink Gen 3 is well suited to a more stationary campsite, cabin or base-camp setup where portability is less important.
Does Starlink need power?
Yes. Unlike handheld satellite communicators and emergency beacons, Starlink requires an external power source while operating. Plan your power setup before traveling to a remote campsite.
Do satellite communicators work without cell service?
Yes. Satellite communicators are designed to communicate through satellite networks rather than cellular towers. They still require suitable satellite visibility and applicable active service.
Does my inReach rental include a data plan?
OER includes a basic data plan with its inReach rentals. Higher-use messaging and tracking options may also be available. Check the individual rental listing for current plan details, included usage and any additional charges.
When should I reserve my rental?
We always recommend booking your rental as early as possible to avoid out of stock gear. We also recommend choosing a start date a few days in advance of your departure/use date in order to avoid UPS shipping issues outside our control and to give you more time to familiarize yourself with the equipment.
